Over the centuries, the island has been ruled by a succession of European powers, who have all left their imprint, especially in the town of Corfu. The Venetian built the attractive narrow streets of tall shuttered and the imposing fortications the French constructed the elegant arcaded Liston; while the British laid out the public gardens, built the royal palace and bequeathed cricket and ginger beer.
There is also a strong musical tradition: many villages have their own philharmonic society and the Corfiotes bring out their military bands at the slightest excuse
